Financial Counsellors are non-judgmental, qualified professionals trained to help if you are in financial difficulty by providing information, support and advocacy at no cost.
WHAT TO EXPECT
An appointment is needed to see a financial counsellor. Some agencies can have waiting lists of up to 3 weeks. If the agency you contact has a long waiting list and you cannot wait please call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.
Appointments usually last for one hour.
Financial counsellors will complete a financial statement and therefore need to know approximately how much your current and outstanding bills are, how much you pay in housing costs, petrol, food, insurance, income, etc.
Financial counsellors will explain your options and rights and support whatever option you choose. Financial counsellors can contact creditors on your behalf with written permission from you to negotiate for a better outcome if you would like them to do so.
WHAT TO BRING
For any loans that you have please bring in the contract. If you cannot nd this, please bring in a statement or letter for the loan. With your written permission and these details, a financial counsellor can ask your lender for a copy of the contract. Sometimes there are insurance policies within the contract you may have been unaware of that can help. There may be issues with the contract itself that may need exploring.
There is no cost for this service and you may need to see the financial counsellor on more than one occasion.
